Letter 1910, Nov. 13, New York City to Mr. Edwin Markham, [Staten Island] / New York American. 1910.

They inform that the advertising for their Holiday book is growing rapidly. To prevent a shortage, they are sending Mr. Markham a batch of Cheney and Field stuff, from the Chicago Examiner, for him to mark as he has been. They also mention the blunder of his missing contribution. It was traced back to an inexperienced office boy, who has promised to reform.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
